Research

The EHA Clinics Research team, led by our Chief Innovation Officer, works with scientists and research organisations to design and implement research projects in Nigeria and other African countries

Our team handles holistic research

Our team can support the development of research protocols that can be implemented effectively in resource-constrained environments and can manage all study operations, logistics, and data management. Additionally, EHA Clinics can support getting all necessary ethical approvals for research based in Nigeria, ensuring the safety of human subjects.

We also operate a Health Research Ethics Committee registered under the Nigerian National Health Research Ethics Committee for review of study protocols.

Our research projects

BMGF LLM Study
partners
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), World Bank Development Research Group, EHA Clinics REACH Program
dates
2023 - Present
Overview
This study is a pilot test of LLM augmentation of FHW decision-making in a clinical setting, in a research design that can mitigate any risks of the AI.The goal of this study is to develop and test scalable and cost-effective ways to use LLMs (such as GPT-4) to provide “second opinions” for health providers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Yemaachi - Northern Nigerian Cancer genome sequencing project.
partners
Yemaachi Biotechnology, Ghana; Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano; Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina.
dates
2023 - Present
Overview
This is a partnership project between EHA Clinics and Yemaachi Biotech, a molecular research organization in Ghana. The project is a genetic Characterization of Breast, Prostate, Bladder, Endometrial, Colorectal Cancers and retinoblastoma in Northern Nigeria. The study sites are Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Kano and Federal Teaching Hospital Katsina. EHA Clinics is coordinating the sample logistics and DNA preparation of the samples.
THINKMD-DIV-RCT
partners
ThinkMD, Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), World Bank Development Research Group, Yale University, Washington State University
dates
2023 - Present
Overview
The primary goal of this study is to understand whether equipping minimally trained/non-trained government healthcare providers with an advanced clinical decision tool such as THINKMD MEDSINC leads them to perform clinical evaluations and determine appropriate care plans that resemble those of higher-skill providers such as doctors.
Pharmacoeconomic Study
partners
University of Michigan
dates
2022
Overview
In the quest to understand why the take-up of high-quality antimalarial, especially ACTs is low in Nigeria, EHA Clinics in collaboration with two Ph.D. students at the University of Michigan kick-started a Pilot study on “Information frictions, demand for quality, and welfare in the market for antimalarial”. The focus of the study is on the price difference between higher and lower-quality medicine, and whether people think vendors around them sell proper medicine.
JSI HEME Study
partners
USAID Advancing Nutrition Program, John Snow Inc., eHealth Africa
dates
2022
Overview
Along with research institutions from other continents; the American University of Beirut (Lebanon), Instituto Nutricional de Centroamérica y Panamá (Guatemala), the National Institute for Medical Research (Tanzania) and the University of British Columbia, EHA Clinics embarked on a Haemoglobin Measurement (HEME) Laboratory Validation Study in collaboration with eHealth Africa to identify the best procedures and methods for determining haemoglobin (Hb) concentration, and anaemia prevalence in population surveys. The HEME Project was sponsored by USAID’s Advancing Nutrition Grants program and led by the JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI) and a consortium of partners focusing on improving nutritional status and health outcomes where the burden of malnutrition is highest and critically impacts on young children, their caregivers, and women of reproductive age (WRA).
Cold Chain Device Research
partners
Global Good
dates
2015 - Present
Overview
EHA Clinics partnered with Global Good to field-test 2 of their cold chain equipment projects and provide iterative improvement support. Equipment was tested in active health facilities and community-based health activities across Northern Nigeria.
Malaria RDT Interpretation with Computer Vision
partners
ThinkMD, eHealth Africa
dates
July 2020 - Dec 2020
Overview
400 million RDTs are administered worldwide each year for malaria, of which tens of millions are misadministered or misinterpreted. This is a field-based study to test the accuracy of Audere’s OpenRDT platform for automatic reading of malaria rapid diagnostic tests (mRDTs).
